This is it. It HAS to be the last day of rectification work. They should have finished on Friday but they didn’t so they came back yesterday. They didn’t finish so they came back today. Well, at least the painter came. And the varnisher came.

Once again it looks like a construction site! And yesterday afternoon I insisted that Adam fix a temporary light in the breakfast area so that the painter could work in some light -yes, I too did not believe that the painter worked there without any direct light, relying on lighting from the dining area and the yard!!!!

Plaster or art?

Of course once the temporary light was fixed you saw all the imperfections on the wall! The painter applied plaster (again) and then it looked like art! Maybe that’s what I should do when I finally settle down – paint the walls with my own art.

I’m completely disillusioned and take back what I said at the beginning – that I was impressed with the attention to detail and quality of work. Sure, if anyone were to look at the end product you would think that its simple and straightforward. Just tell them what you want and they’ll do it. It just ain’t that easy in reality. Adam needs better quality control upfront and this will reduce rectification works. I guess that’s not how they work. Its just how I would do things.

Anyway I told him, THIS IS IT. Everything gets fixed today. Not more of the same. And it applies to the wall painting and the defective woodwork in the foyer partition and the AV cabinet.

Danial arrived back really late last night from Kerteh where he had been all week on work. I was unbelievably occupied yesterday that I did not eat anything all day and so thoroughly enjoyed the Big Mac that I had asked Danial to take-away for me.

This morning I was up bright and early to wait for the guys to come back and finish whatever they had to do. Sani the LG technician was right on time arriving at 9:30am to replace the outdoor unit of the master bedroom airconditioner. I told him about water dripping from the indoor unit this morning and he said it was fine if it was only then and not all night. But he did comment that the installer had not done a proper job and the bracket was loose such and that’s why the unit would not fit back properly after he opened it last week to check it when it wasn’t working.

Later after he left I complained to Adam but since he couldn’t get the installer to come over he applied cement to secure the bracket himself. I wasn’t happy with that and told him he should get the installer to come over and finish his job properly.

The varnishing of the new door took all day and since I refused to leave the apartment while the workers were all here it meant we had to live with the strong odour of the shellac.

Varnishing the new door

Using shellac is the traditional way to varnish wood and these guys are masters in their art. I saw how one of them went about mixing the colour and writing the “formula” down. They take their work seriously but I can’t say much about their safety or health consciousness. One moment I caught one of them smoking his cigarette right next to the cans of spirit and whatever else they used to mix the shellac. Whatever it is it smells very toxic and despite all the ventilation in the apartment it gave me a headache.

I tried to be productive so I got busy updating records and expenses. No, I didn’t Facebook!

Fixing the security grille to the master bathroom

Kenny who supplied the security grilles arrived with the grilles for the master bathroom and guest bathroom window. This was additional grilles which somehow escaped our attention when we were ordering them. Later in the afternoon I saw that they had really botched up the job in the guest bathroom. That wasn’t my grille because it was smaller than the window and it had an opening to put your hand through to close the window. That is strange because I didn’t have that on any of the other grilles!

So guess what? Off it came of course. And I guess they have to remake the grille and come back again to fix it.

Yesterday I had gone through with Adam a whole list of items that needed his attention. He would action item by item and in fact had assigned CP to organise and follow up.

The plumber came to sort out the stuck sink and the stink in the guest bathroom! We can’t have that!!! Apparently it was due to the workers irresponsibly pouring basecoat paint (very very smelly!) down the sink. That had caused the sink to get stuck in the first place. Anyway, the clog was successfully removed but the smell will take some time….the more water runs through the pipes the faster it will go.

Just after 4pm I discovered the airconditioner in was leaking again and this time it wouldn’t stop. When I called Adam to tell him the problem  he said he needed to think what to do. Whaaaat???? This aircond thing is really beginning to get on my nerves.

CP came back with the plumber and I asked him to take a look and since the plumber was here, he very kindly checked to find out what was causing the leak. It was a pipe connection come loose. Honestly, I cannot say much about the installer’s quality of work. Adam should fire him!  CP said he had fixed the problem temporarily and it should last till Monday when he would get the installer to come.

Adam then called to say that he managed to get another installer to check the problem in an hour. I passed the phone to CP…enough is enough…CP blew his top and told Adam he had to stick with the original installer because he must finish his work! CP was so right. I should fire Adam!

It had been a long day but I still had stuff to do. When everybody had left, I went to Tesco and did the much needed shopping for groceries and kitchen stuff. It was productive and I ticked everything off my shopping list!

What a busy day it was…seems like old times – yes, it really seems a long time ago since anyone was doing any work here!

Who came?

Replacing damaged laminated floor panels in the master bedroom

It started with the floor SWAT team who arrived just as I got ready at 10am. In a flash, they ripped off the wooden skirting and then removed whole panels of damaged laminated wood floor and replaced them. For other minor damages they were applying wood-coloured silicone. New to me.

Laminated floor panels removed from the breakfast area

Next, Azham from Gas Malaysia came to connect the natural gas..hey, now we can have pasta cooked the way I like it! As the Malay saying goes, now my “kitchen will smoke”! Basically it means now I can start cooking. Then Nelson from the lock shop arrived with his installer to replace the lock of the front door, fit in the door viewer, install security bolts etc. Then Adam came with CP in tow. Connie passed by around noon to drop in the additional 2 dining chairs herself  and later the Chubb people came to deliver the safe.

Replacing the lock of the main door

Finally, Adam’s people arrived with the doors for our new breakfast area.

Preparing to install the door Doors installed.. Next...the door frame Finally done..finishing touches

They fixed the door and removed the kitchen door. It took all afternoon and they finally finished at around 6pm. It looks really good but right now we don’t have lighting, ventilation nor furniture in the area! Tomorrow…

It was a hot day and I had the air-conditioning on in the study. This was my “refuge”….from all the workers and the crazy heat!

Anyway, I hoped this was going to be the last day I had people doing stuff at the apartment but it appears not. I think I’ll also be grounded tomorrow because they need to come and varnish the new door. The LG technician also called to say he needed to replace the outdoor unit for the master bedroom air conditioner plus Nelson said he will deliver the safe key and explain how to use it tomorrow.

I guess I shall have to learn to do things at night…I need to get pots and pans, and basic kitchen stuff so after a shower, it was off to Living Quarters at the Curve. I also managed to drop by at Metro to get some long overdue cosmetics and personal stuff.

Today I went to the apartment to check out what they have done – Adam had told me that his people had put the first layer of protection over the laminated wood flooring (the tarpaulin) and tomorrow they will put the second layer (plywood sheets). Indeed they did.

This is the view from the entrance…the living room will be right next to the balcony where we get a beautiful view of the TwinTowers and the KL Skyline as well as the King’s Palace which is being constructed opposite our apartment building. Of course, if you look to the right, you see the rooftops of houses in the vicinity…The dining area is next to the living area.

View of the entrance…nothing there right now but we will create a “foyer” by putting up a wood and glass partition. Feng shui experts say you should divert the “chi” lest it all flows out the balcony!

View of the little nook which we will make a nice little study or even a “Moroccan corner”….I’m still exploring possibilities. Not a priority area right now.
